On Thursday, Harley-Davidson, the American motorcycle manufacturer, launched the 2018 Softail range of motorcycles in India with prices ranging between Rs 11.99 lakh and Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi)—the Street Bob for Rs 11.99 lakh, Fat Bob for Rs 13.99 lakh, Fat Boy for Rs 17.49 lakh and Heritage Classic for Rs 18.99 lakh. These four motorcycles, designed under the largest product development project in company’s history, feature a stiffer and significantly lighter frame that harnesses the high torque output of the new dual-counterbalanced Milwaukee-Eight 107 engine.

“Our new offerings demonstrate the focus on reinventing products for motorcycle enthusiasts and aspiring riders,” Harley-Davidson India and China MD Peter MacKenzie said during the launch in New Delhi. “With high-performance dual-bending valve front suspension and an adjustable hidden rear monoshock, the aggressively styled 2018 Softail models are faster, lighter and better handling than any of their big twin cruiser predecessors.”

Softail refers to motorcycles that have a hidden rear suspension system to absorb bumps. They give the appearance of having a hard-tail or rigid frame, with the shock absorbers under the motorcycle and out of view.

These new models are up to 17kg lighter than their predecessors, delivering improved power-to-weight ratio that provides quicker acceleration, better braking and dynamic cornering capability. All 2018 Softail models get the most powerful engines ever offered in Harley-Davidson Big Twin cruisers, the new Milwaukee-Eight 107 V-Twin.

Harley-Davidson India, which started operations in August 2009 and appointed its first dealership in July 2010, currently sells 14 models through 27 dealerships. It has an assembly unit at Bawal—on the Delhi-Jaipur highway—in Haryana.
