The Supreme Court on Monday sought a district-wise data on cases pending under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act from the Registrar Generals of High Courts across the country. A bench, comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, issued the direction on a plea seeking Rs 10 lakh as compensation for the parents of an eight-month-old girl who was allegedly raped by her cousin in north-west Delhi in January.

The petition, filed by Advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava, had also sought framing of guidelines that investigation and trial of the cases under POCSO (pertaining to rape of children below 12 years) should be completed within six months from the date of registration of FIR.

On Monday, he referred to a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report and said a majority of the cases under POCSO were still pending.

The top court directed its Registry to communicate the order to the registrars general of the high courts seeking a district-wise detailed report on pendency of cases and posted the matter for hearing on April 20.
