Bihar Elections: Grand Alliance Triumphs, Big Loss for BJP

The BJP suffered a major defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections in what was seen as a verdict on PM Modi's governance on the national stage. The Nitish-Lalu Grand Alliance won 178 seats while the BJP managed a paltry 58 in the bitterly fought contest. Leading news channel NDTV got faced embarassment as it wrongly called the election for the BJP as early as an hour into the official count around 9 am. It had to back-pedal on its earlier statement exposing Indian pollsters. The defeat will make governance harder for the BJG given its minority status in the upper house whose members are appointed by state assemblies such as Bihar.
